One of the hottest things in technology today is the Internet of Things (IoT).  What is IoT, and how does it apply to you and your startup? A term first known only by developers and engineers, it seems today everyone is talking about it, but what does it actually mean? The answer varies depending on where you look and who you ask.

International Data Corporation (IDC) estimates there will be 30 billion connected “things” by 2020, and IoT is fundamentally changing how value is created. It has never been more important to understand IoT,  edge computing, smart cities, the intelligent sidewalk, and what it all means for your organization.

Come along to this session, join the conversation and learn from some of our local industry technologists, thought leaders, and business leaders who are on the edge of this wave of innovation.

Python Productivity for Edge Computing Devices (Room: The Quarry)

To some Cloud computing is so "yesterday". Forester Research, warns that the coming sensor deluge makes large parts of Cloud computing unrealistic. Instead in it's place it is becoming far more efficient and practical to process data when and where it is collected, data collection enabled by the Internet of Things Smart Devices - your smart phone, a smart traffic signal, a Fit-bit, or other digitally enabled and networked device resident on the edge of a network.

This is called "Edge Computing," where data gets processed as close to the source as possible - the edge of the network - instead of it being uploaded and processed in massive, centralized data-storage systems.

So what does that mean for startups, what are some of the practical applications of edge computing?

Come along to this session and learn about some real world practical applications of IoT and edge computing using Python and  Xilinx Open Source Technology, you will hopefully walk away with an understanding, if you do not have one already, that as the Internet of Things continues to evolve, the opportunity of edge computing innovations continues to rise.

In this session you will obtain Python tips and tricks to use with the Xilinx Open Source Technology PYNQ, then continue your learning into the practical workshop session in the afternoon and get some hands on exposure to working with the Xilinx Open Source Technology: "Workshop: Fast Start with Xilinx Open-Source Solutions -XUP PYNQ"

What is PYNQ?

PYNQ is an open-source project from Xilinx® that makes it easy to design embedded systems with Xilinx Zynq® All Programmable Systems on Chips (APSoCs).

Using the Python language and libraries, designers can exploit the benefits of programmable logic and microprocessors in Zynq to build more capable and exciting embedded systems.
PYNQ users can now create high performance embedded applications with
  • parallel hardware execution
  • high frame-rate video processing
  • hardware accelerated algorithms
  • real-time signal processing
  • high bandwidth IO
  • low latency control
The PYNQ-Z1 is the first Zynq board to support PYNQ.

Who is PYNQ for?

PYNQ is intended to be used by a wide range of designers and developers including:
  • Software developers who want to take advantage of the capabilities of Zynq and programmable hardware without having to use ASIC-style design tools to design hardware.
  • System architects who want an easy software interface and framework for their Zynq design.
  • Hardware designers who want their designs to be used by the widest possible audience.

What do I need?

For this workshop you will need to bring a laptop with a wired internet/Ethernet port to connect to the PYNQ development board.

Jupyter Notebook is a browser based interactive computing environment. Jupyter notebook documents can be created that include live code, interactive widgets, plots, explanatory text, equations, images and video.

The PYNQ-Z1 can be easily programmed in Jupyter Notebook using Python.
Using Python, developers can use hardware libraries and overlays on the programmable logic. Hardware libraries, or overlays, can speed up software running on the PYNQ-Z1, and customize the hardware platform and interfaces.

The PYNQ image is a bootable Linux image, and includes the pynq Python package, and other open-source packages.

The Jupyter notebook interface is browser based. Only a compatible web browser is needed to start programming PYNQ with Python.

For higher performance, you can also use C/C++ with PYNQ. The Xilinx SDK software development environment is available for free and supports the PYNQ-Z1.

You can also use third party software development tools.
New hardware libraries and overlays can be created using standard Xilinx and third party hardware design tools.

The PYNQ-Z1 is fully supported by the free WebPACK version of Xilinx Vivado.
