Startup Health: Tools to Handle Your Stress and That of Your Team (Room: Onyx)
Limited Capacity seats available

It can be tough enough to manage your own stress, but how can you as a founder, leader, or manager help the members of your team handle their feelings of stress, burnout, or disengagement? A stressed team or organization can negatively impact work and productivity, and as a startup we cannot afford to lose our productivity.

So how can you keep a healthy state of mind for the team, and thus your organization's productivity?

While dealing with stress, leadership, and management is an ancient challenge, some of the latest discoveries in neuroscience shed new light on both the older wisdom traditions and the latest coaching approaches. You will learn among other things to do a mental "SCARF" audit, to quickly try and get to the heart of the underlying concerns behind the actual conflicts.

In this Startup Health session listen, learn and ask questions as you gather some tips, tricks, and tools to keeping stress levels manageable then join our follow-on Startup Health session “Startup Stress, Identifying and Handling Your Team’s Secret Triggers” later in the week.

Startup Health: Reframing: The power to flip the universe from where you sit.
Limited Capacity seats available

It is easy to think that “work” and “stress” go hand in hand. After all if it were a walk in the park, it probably would not be called work. There is however a point at which the stress of work can actually become detrimental to one’s health. In fact, studies have shown that two in every five employees say that stress at work has affected their health by causing them to increase unhealthy habits, eat poorly, and forego exercise.

Stress is Contagious, But So Is Wellbeing.

In this Startup Health session we take lessons learned from effective personal stress management starting with identifying your sources of stress and developing strategies to manage them. From there we take our focus to the organizational level to identify team stress sources and mitigation strategies.

Reframing may be the most powerful "lifehack" we know of, seemingly common, even conventional wisdom, but truly our most amazing choice. Come see how we take this cliche idea and turn it into a superpower, one percent or degree at a time.

In this workshop, we will explore various methods of reframing, from opposition, to mitigation, to compassion, to humor, and more, giving you various tools to help get you "unstuck" from whatever hell or situation you find yourself or those around you in.

Getting a car unstuck from the snow or mud usually is a matter of the tiniest momentum, and perhaps a turn of the wheel or direction to ease the exit. The mind is far more pliable, powerful and flexible than we think, and the heart can shift from despair to joy, from tears to laughter in a moment.

Learning to do this as a "go to" response literally transforms your life and that of those around you.

IP Overview: Patents, Trademarks, Copyright, Trade Secrets, and Licensing
Limited Capacity filling up

There are only a handful of situations where replication of your art, your work, your brand is considered an act of flattery. For the majority of startups this certainly is not the case, and the act of duplication of your works can be a serious problem if not devastating, to your business.

So, what is intellectual property, and should your startup care about it?

Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names and images used in commerce. Intellectual property is divided into two categories: Industrial Property, and Copyright.

Sounds perfectly clear, right? If it doesn’t, have no fear you are not alone!

Come along to this session for a conversation with subject matter experts on the topic of Intellectual Property. The conversation will be engaging, thought provoking, and filled with real-life scenarios of how and when Intellectual Property done right can improve the position of your venture, and the impacts to your business when done wrong or not at all.

Suena perfectamente claro, ¿verdad?

Exit Strategy? What's Yours?
Limited Capacity filling up

As an owner or a founder of a company or business when you meet with financial advisors, potential investors, or future employees at some point in time they are going to ask you about your exit strategy. If you are like most entrepreneurs, you probably do not realize that developing your exit strategy is one of the most important steps you will ever take. By not having the right exit strategy in place today, you are risking both the financial wealth of your venture and that of you own personal financial security.

So, let’s ask you - What's the exit strategy for the company you founded?

Come to this session to understand why it’s important to define your exit strategy at the beginning of your startup, listen, and learn about some of the many different types of exit strategies and their implications, ask questions and get insight into which strategy might maximize your wealth whether that be selling to a strategic partner, a financial buyer, going IPO, offering an ICO, or ESOP.

Diversity at the Board and Leadership Level
Limited Capacity seats available

In today’s global marketplace, where diverse backgrounds, skills, and experience are critical for strategic and operational decisions, having more women involved at the highest levels of business management and organizational governance is associated with more profitable and well-managed organizations. Our startups should be no different.

Even though the percentage of women in the talent pipeline has steadily increased over the last three decades there are still large gender gaps from entry-level right through to top executive positions. Research from the Boardlist shows that in tech women hold only 30% of the entry-level roles, and only approximately 7% of private tech company boards are made up of women.

In a multi-year study the UC Davis Graduate School of Management bench-marked annually gender diversity at the leadership level. In their results they show how those organizations with women in leadership roles have a bottom line improvement. Join this conversation and hear some of reasons why having women in senior leadership and Board roles will benefit your entire organization.

Mentor Talk: Chris Salter - Knowing When and How to Bring in Help
Limited Capacity filling up

Being a leader in a startup can be a lonely and solitary role and we often times fall to thoughts of a lack of support, cooperation, and collaboration from our organization. More often than not, though, these thoughts are not the fault of our team's or organization's unwillingness to lend a hand, but the fact that most people simply don’t, or won’t, ask for help.

Why? A common barrier is that we are often times blind to the fact that we need help. Another barrier is that we often times fear asking for help as it is interpreted as a sign of weakness, ignorance, or failure. Also, a strong culture of self-reliance is one of our core barriers, an admirable trait that can cause a significant failure in your startup.

Come and enjoy conversation with Chris Salter, a seasoned entrepreneur, CEO of Music Wizard, Board Member for Startup Longmont, mentor, and community thought leader. Chris teaches and mentors in the Longmont community and further afield on inception and early stage entrepreneurial tools and thinking.

Throughout LSW’18 Chris will be working with a number of our community thought leaders to provide entrepreneurial sessions across a variety of topics under the Founder Track. In this session, he will be discussion when you should ask for help, whom you should ask for help, how you should ask for help, and most importantly how to get out of our own way and accept help.

Innovation Mindset for Startups
Limited Capacity seats available

Organizations with goals of rapid growth need to combine an innovative mindset with enterprise-level focus and resources. When you think about the typical startup, what words come to mind? "Lean"? "Innovative"? "Trendy"? "Agile"?

What about a classic Fortune 500 enterprise, or a municipality that has been around for decades or centuries even. Odds, are the words that come to mind invoke a completely different set of words - maybe "bureaucratic," "political", "too hierarchical", "stifled", "outdated" and perhaps "difficult".

Despite their intrinsic differences, one thing is certain: The pace of change across industry is so fast and volatile that organizations of all sizes risk their very survival unless they become more disruptive and innovation.

Come along to this conversation and understand why and how organizations, need to, and can develop cultures of open collaboration, and most importantly, innovation - developing an innovation mindset for startups is, hyper co-innovation.

SWOT analysis is a tool, not necessarily an end, that helps you both identify and mitigate your biggest challenges and leverage your biggest assets. It can be used for any kind of project or opportunity, and whether you do it or not, those now unidentified threats and weaknesses are still part of the challenge.

Awareness allows you to mitigate and control, which leads to success. Without awareness, your success addressing the issues is mostly dumb luck or instinct. The most important aspect of learning to do a SWOT analysis is that situations change, and you must often course correct with a new updated analysis. This becomes a common tool for all members of your team to begin to approach problems and analysis in a coherent consistent way, with or without the leadership present at any given moment.

Break Through the Clutter With a Nuclear Phrase (SNAP)
Limited Capacity seats available

Shorter and shorter attention spans challenge us to learn to speak more powerfully, concisely, and effectively. Join this workshop and learn how to craft a very powerful request in in the form of a "nuclear phase" for the most impact with the least number of words.

Most of us believe we know how to communicate and talk about our business, but the challenge is we are often "lost in the trees" of our business. Even if the person we are talking to understands our business, unless we paint them a picture or give them a powerful succinct image, they cannot convey our business to other people dramatically limiting the impact and networking utility of our "SNAP".

Come learn to boil your mission and message down to essentials and make powerful life changing requests that get results and allow your contacts to enroll their contacts as well.

Come and hear how Angels think, work and connect, learn what it takes to position your messaging to attract and collaborate with an Angel. If you are interested in becoming an Angel but don't know how, join the conversation and hear some of the rules, restrictions and challenges others have faced.

Entrepreneurship and Ideation. Reversed (Room: C1724)
Limited Capacity seats available

When does entrepreneurship actually start? How can today's students capture ideas, cultivate a plan, find support for potential business ideas, and keep it all under control?

In this session we will be taking a reversed approach, meaning our panel will be asking questions of the audience! Our panel, consisting of Tomorrow's Entrepreneurs and our subject matter expert will be learning from you our mentors, seasoned entrepreneurs, service providers, community mentors and subject matter experts.

The mechanics:
Each question or conversational topic will be posed to the audience and invited to answer. Those invited to respond will have just a few short minutes (timed) to respond, if there is no audience respondent the dubious task will fall to the panel subject matter expert.

Let’s see who gets stumped first!

GDPR and What it Means to Your Startup (Here's a Hint - Don't Ignore It!) (Room: #C1722)
Limited Capacity seats available

Whether just starting your company or migrating your existing storage infrastructure or applications issues of cybersecurity, speed, and scalability should be high on everyone’s agenda. Add to that Privacy and “Data Protection” (as this is referred to in Europe) and the requirements keep getting more and more complicated. As a founder or technology leader in your organization, if Privacy and Data Protection that is critical to any company’s ability to succeed and build a trustworthy reputation isn’t at the top of your list, it should be.

The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the biggest change in data privacy and protection laws in over 20 years. It has a number of important requirements that every company should know about:
• The GDPR applies to companies around the world, not just in Europe. If you offer any services in Europe, or handle the data from European individuals, you could be covered
• Failure to comply with GDPR carries fines of up to 4% of global revenue
• Some forty-four independent regulators are poised to enforce the GDPR today

Come join this panel to hear how these legal changes can impact your global business, and what steps and options are available to put you on the path to compliance. GDPR is not something your startup should not ignore.

Workshop: Pitch Practice Mentoring (Room: Community Room A)
Limited Capacity seats available

Take the knowledge learned from today's ideation session through to marketing and communications and prepare a brief presentation pitch to cast your idea to a live audience.

Most investors and capital have prerequisites to investment that are pretty well known but often not addressed effectively up front. Come along to this session listen, learn, and hear the tips, tricks, and tools for taking your capital pitch down to 5 minutes and by doing so keeping your messaging simple, focused, and straightforward.

This approach has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for dozens of entrepreneurs who have done the work to follow the simple guidelines because it takes what was a very intimidating and jargon-filled process and turns it into a simple, logical, straight forward explanation of the opportunity. This raises the entrepreneur's confidence and comfort, which can increase their chances of gaining that trust and investment.
