Discover YOUR Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (Room: The Quarry)
Limited Capacity seats available

What exactly is a startup ecosystem?

A startup ecosystem is formed by people, startups in various stages, and various types of organizations in a location with each contributing through interactions as a dynamic and complex system to cultivate new startup opportunities.

Startup ecosystems are generally defined by these network of interactions among people, community, organizations, and their environment. They come in many types, but are usually better known as startup ecosystems of specific cities or online communities.

Come along to this Smart City, "smarter. together." session and meet a few of the organizations working together in and around Longmont to help evolve our entrepreneurial ecosystem, build and foster a Colorado regional network of resources, and create a recognition alongside our sister communities as an entrepreneurial ecosystem startups want to start-up in.

Why Smarter Cities Need Startups, and Startups Need Smarter Cities
Limited Capacity filling up

In just a few short years our world will be drastically different. Almost everything in and around us in our lives and our cities will be automated thanks to The Internet of Things (IoT) and the latest in Edge computing and communications technology. Steve Case, founder of AOL, calls this the Third Wave which is about “integrating the internet into every aspect of our lives in seamless and often invisible ways.”

This shift will have a profound impact for innovators, entrepreneurs, and startups as demand for products and services change as well as the workforce that is needed to support our hyper-connected cities of today and in the future. So where do you and your startup fit in to this new paradigm of smart city opportunity?

In this session begin your LSW’18 Smart City journey, discover some of the new innovations and opportunities that are emerging in the Smart City Market, hear and discuss why cities need startups, and why our startups need smarter cities. It amounts to being "smarter. together."

Open Data: From Publishing City Data to Solving Problems
Limited Capacity seats available

The last few years has seen a steady growth in appetite for open data. Much like open source software, open data tends to have a handful of faithful advocates and, despite new datasets becoming available daily, it can sometimes feel like a challenge just breaking into this global, yet relatively niche community.

What is open data?

In short, open data is information which is free to use, share, and build upon. Typically, government and big business powers the open data market by providing non-personal data in a variety of formats (such as CSV). This information can then be used by creators in a number of ways, from simply harnessing it for knowledge to performing calculations and manipulations to essentially make something totally new.

Come join this session as we discuss what open data actually is, learn how smarter cities are looking to innovators, data scientists, and entrepreneurs for help, and explore some simple ways you can get involved in using open data from developing ideas and apps to contributing back to the community knowledge pool.

Keynote: Tom Higley - Cities, Wicked Problems & Startups that Matter
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

At the turn of the prior century fewer than 10% of the world's population lived in an urban area. Today, that number is at 50% and is projected to grow to 70%+ by mid century. This means that most of the people who experience the world's wicked problems – in health, water, food, energy, learning, infrastructure, transportation, security & privacy, waste and climate change – will experience them in cities. It also means that resources for addressing these problems will need to be found within cities and be focused on cities and their inhabitants. Startups have played a relatively insignificant role in these matters. Hold on tight, things are about to change.

*Available in English, Spanish and ASL.
*ASL Interpretation by Jessica Collins

Limited Capacity seats available

Cities are a key to both our technological and sustainable future and a city putting a challenge on the table and inviting startups to help co-solve a problem makes for interesting startup opportunity.

During LSW’18 we have introduced you to entrepreneurial ecosystems, lab cities, cities as incubators, and the growing Smart City opportunities for startups. Let’s now have a conversation about how startups are working and collaborating with cities to co-solve some of our urban challenges. Together we can partner and innovate new partnership models, shared innovation and incubator spaces, deliver smaller real-world pilot initiatives and other approaches to fostering smart city projects that are truly meaningful.

It all starts with a conversation, working together cities and startups could make it easier for businesses to work with municipalities by running pilots before embarking on large-scale public-private partnerships. By engaging the private sector and startups in this conversational manner sparks innovation, rather than simply procuring off-the-shelf products and services.

So, come along and join this conversation between cities, the Colorado Smart Cities Alliance, and startups already having collaborative conversations.
