Workshop: Fast Start With Xilinx AWS EC2 F1 Instances (Room: C1722)
Limited Capacity seats available

The Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) is now equipped with Vivado design software and Virtex UltraScale+ FPGAs. These pre-configured EC2 F1 instances combine unprecedented performance and convenience in a scalable, 24/7, on-demand environment.

Wow, what does that mean? Well come along to this informative workshop and find out!

To get you started thinking about it, Amazon EC2 F1 is a compute instance with field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) that you can program to create custom hardware accelerations for your application. F1 instances are easy to program and come with everything you need to develop, simulate, debug, and compile your hardware acceleration code, including an FPGA Developer AMI and Hardware Developer Kit (HDK). Once your FPGA design is complete, you can register it as an Amazon FPGA Image (AFI) and deploy it to your F1 instance in just a few clicks. You can reuse your AFIs as many times, and across as many F1 instances as you like.

Come join the Xilinx team as they introduce you to this innovation and walk you through some actual hands-on work. Using Python in a Jupyter notebook to take advantage of FPGAs for ML inferencing, without having to know FPGAs. Ask questions and learn the power these ECT F1’s can bring to your infrastructure architecture.

************************************************

Don't forget your laptop and Power Supply!

************************************************

Entrepreneurship and Ideation. Reversed (Room: C1724)
Limited Capacity seats available

When does entrepreneurship actually start? How can today's students capture ideas, cultivate a plan, find support for potential business ideas, and keep it all under control?

In this session we will be taking a reversed approach, meaning our panel will be asking questions of the audience! Our panel, consisting of Tomorrow's Entrepreneurs and our subject matter expert will be learning from you our mentors, seasoned entrepreneurs, service providers, community mentors and subject matter experts.

The mechanics:
Each question or conversational topic will be posed to the audience and invited to answer. Those invited to respond will have just a few short minutes (timed) to respond, if there is no audience respondent the dubious task will fall to the panel subject matter expert.

Let’s see who gets stumped first!

Mentor Talk: Whitedove Gannon - Balancing Life, Business, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship
Limited Capacity seats available

Whitedove Gannon, the “down-to-earth chick with the different name”, is the founder of StartUP Academy for Entrepreneurs, and owner of In the Books, LLC, and not your typical accountant.

Going beyond her zeal for re-inventing traditional bookkeeping and redefining what it means to be efficient, she is also a happily married entrepreneur with five kids! Over the past four years of growing an accounting and bookkeeping business, she has had the pleasure of leading other small businesses and entrepreneurs to stay ahead of the financial aspects of their business while creating an opportunity for them to run their business efficiently in a cloud-based environment.

With a strong desire to be unique and to express herself creatively, Whitedove is not your average accountant.  After spending almost 15 years as the co-owner with her husband of a mid-sized company in 2013 she started her own bookkeeping firm with a desire to re-invent traditional bookkeeping and redefine what it means to be efficient. With that goal in mind, Whitedove developed a new approach to working with clients – going beyond the "data-entry only" mentality for bookkeepers and focusing on resolving business efficiency while adding value and serving the day-to-day needs of business clients.

That's right where she wants to be: Balancing Life

Come and enjoy conversation and laugh with Whitedove as she recounts her entrepreneurial journey, and while doing so learn how she balances life, business, innovation and entrepreneurship, and her family!

Machine Learning for Startups (Room #C1722)
Limited Capacity seats available

Machine learning has become a popular buzzword in the tech community. An application of artificial intelligence technology, machine learning analyzes data in order to learn and in cases identify specific behaviors, patterns, and trends and then predict or replicate them in the future. Its uses range from healthcare and cybersecurity to travel and shopping, and today in combination with IoT is becoming a valuable tool in many Smart City initiatives.

Yet there is a misconception that to leverage machine learning you need to be a mathematical genius or have a degree in Artificial Intelligence. In reality, most machine-learning applications use well-understood, well-tested, off-the-shelf algorithms. For many developers, especially those at early stage startups, the real challenge lies in training the data. Overcoming this challenge takes insight, strategy, good product development, and good high-quality, labeled training data.

During this session you will get a hands on look at how simple it can be, learn the tricks, see some of the tools, and ask many questions to understand if you really need machine learning or not.

Exploring Today's Skills Needs: What are the Talent Needs of Startups Today and in the Future? Reversed (Room: #C1722)
Limited Capacity seats available

Longmont Startup Week has a focus upon Smart Cities, as this movement has become very familiar in recent years, but how often do we think about the “Smart Skills” necessary to operate and maintain these cities, or the startups that will be created tomorrow or in the future in support of those Smart Cities.

If a smart city leverages "Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to enhance quality, performance, and interactivity of urban services and infrastructure to reduce costs and resource consumption and to improve contact between citizens and government,” then what will be the skills required to run, maintain and inform those cities.

Come along and hear what skills smart cities are looking for, what startups of today and tomorrow are looking for, and join in on the conversation about what skills we should be focusing on for our educational resources.

In this session we will be taking a reversed approach, meaning our panel will be asking questions of the audience! Our panel consisting of Tomorrow's Entrepreneurs and our subject matter expert will be learning from you, our mentors, seasoned entrepreneurs, service providers, community mentors and subject matter experts.

The mechanics:
Each question or conversational topic will be posed to the audience and invited to answer. Those invited to respond will have just a few short minutes (timed) to respond, if there is no audience respondent the dubious task will fall to the panel subject matter expert.

Let’s see who gets stumped first!

Cities Talking with Startups: A Collaborative Approach to Problem Solving (Room: Community Room B)
Limited Capacity seats available

Cities are a key to both our technological and sustainable future and a city putting a challenge on the table and inviting startups to help co-solve a problem makes for interesting startup opportunity.

During LSW’18 we have introduced you to entrepreneurial ecosystems, lab cities, cities as incubators, and the growing Smart City opportunities for startups. Let’s now have a conversation about how startups are working and collaborating with cities to co-solve some of our urban challenges. Together we can partner and innovate new partnership models, shared innovation and incubator spaces, deliver smaller real-world pilot initiatives and other approaches to fostering smart city projects that are truly meaningful.

It all starts with a conversation, working together cities and startups could make it easier for businesses to work with municipalities by running pilots before embarking on large-scale public-private partnerships. By engaging the private sector and startups in this conversational manner sparks innovation, rather than simply procuring off-the-shelf products and services.

So, come along and join this conversation between cities, the Colorado Smart Cities Alliance, and startups already having collaborative conversations.

Finding Hidden Talent: Autistic Talent in the Workplace (Room: Community Room A)
Limited Capacity seats available

April was Autism Awareness Month and, while it's a good idea to remind people about awareness for autism, few need reminding. Given the significant number of individuals impacted by ASD (current diagnosis rates are up nearly 300% and expected to increase by 1,292% by 2020 - according to the CDC), one would think we could  do a much better job of helping autistic individuals gain employment. The sad truth, though, is we don't. People with autism are untapped reservoir of talent, and adults with autism bring special talents to the workplace. Join this panel conversation and discover why thinking differently about autism in the workplace is something that you should embrace for your creative and innovative pursuits.

GDPR and What it Means to Your Startup (Here's a Hint - Don't Ignore It!) (Room: #C1722)
Limited Capacity seats available

Whether just starting your company or migrating your existing storage infrastructure or applications issues of cybersecurity, speed, and scalability should be high on everyone’s agenda. Add to that Privacy and “Data Protection” (as this is referred to in Europe) and the requirements keep getting more and more complicated. As a founder or technology leader in your organization, if Privacy and Data Protection that is critical to any company’s ability to succeed and build a trustworthy reputation isn’t at the top of your list, it should be.

The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the biggest change in data privacy and protection laws in over 20 years. It has a number of important requirements that every company should know about:
• The GDPR applies to companies around the world, not just in Europe. If you offer any services in Europe, or handle the data from European individuals, you could be covered
• Failure to comply with GDPR carries fines of up to 4% of global revenue
• Some forty-four independent regulators are poised to enforce the GDPR today

Come join this panel to hear how these legal changes can impact your global business, and what steps and options are available to put you on the path to compliance. GDPR is not something your startup should not ignore.

Incubators, Accelerators, or Go it Alone? (Room: #C1724)
Limited Capacity seats available

In recent years, the landscape of financing alternatives for seed-stage companies has become somewhat complicated for founders. Depending on where you are the number of (or the lack of) incubators and accelerators supporting startups can be a daunting gauntlet.

Come along to this conversation to hear discussion around whether a startup can be better served by joining up with an incubator/accelerator or by simply “going it alone” and building from ground up with support from an experienced investor.

The Inclusive Aspects of Multi-Generational Entrepreneurship (Room: Community Room B)
Limited Capacity seats available

With 55 million millennials forming the largest contingent of today's workforce in the country, it's no wonder companies are scratching their heads wondering how to attract and retain members of this tech-savvy generation. It is also important to remember, though, that there are other people in the workforce too. Gen-X'ers, at nearly 5 million strong, still have a good amount of workforce contributions ahead of them (and according to Sage Software, Inc. are more likely to start a startup than a millennial), and 44 million Baby Boomers show up to work every day. Let's not forget the talent, motivation and, experience in the workforce beyond millennials. Join this conversation with a multigenerational panel of founders, leaders, and startups.
